4 important tasks to do after you arrive in Australia
When I thought of writing this topic, I was trying to remember what I had done during the first week after I arrived in Australia. It was not that hard for me to rewind the memory. My memory is still fresh about my first week’s activities. That was quite exciting week of meeting new people, new language and altogether a new world.
The first tasks I have done and every student who migrates to Australia would do are:
#1. Open a Bank Account:
The first task is to open a bank account. It is a very easy process. Now a days you can open online and deposit by visiting a branch or ATM.
There are many banks in Australia like Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Westpac, Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), St. George’s bank, ING bank, National Australia Bank and many more. When we think of bank, we usually look at easy withdrawal of money and location to offer us prompt service whether it is online or walk through the branch.
If you consider these features ING is the preferred one, I have recently opened an account with ING Bank, it has no account keeping fee and a good variable interest rate of 2.8% pa on your savings and can withdraw from any ATM (initially you get charged with fee but bank pays us back ATM fee within 5 days).
So Open Orange Everyday and use this promo code EYC746 to get $100 bonus in your account. That’s a good start! Quick steps to open an account:
- Open ING Everyday account online and enter EYC746 in the promo box (in one of the last steps) when opening your account
- Deposit $1,000+ into the account for every day useDeposit the remaining amount into a Savings Maximiser Account
- You will be sent a Debit Card connected to your account and make 5+ purchases to avail the offer.
#2. Deposit Cash
It is not a good idea to hang around with the cash in your valet. You are new to the place and also to the currency. It would be ideal to have very minimal cash to meet the daily expenses until the debit card is received from the bank. This would help in two ways: not spending too much than necessary and you slowly get used to the denominations.
#3. Visit the University/College
This is the main purpose of our visit to Australia. Isn’t it? There should an email from University about conditional Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) and the final enrolment date into the course. Once you arrive at the University, this letter should be shown at the admissions counter of the University for further Enrolment Process.
The further process includes issuing the student ID card or ID number, library card and any other amenities that university offers for a student. This is one of the important tasks to finish avoiding any hassles of enrolment. University acts under strict policies of Department of Immigration and Border Security.
If the last date of enrolment is closed, this might lead to problems in the enrolment process. So better make your first week as a good and memorable experience. After this process is complete, hang around the university to get acquainted with the university building and the environment around University.
#4. Purchase a Mobile Plan:
We all know we cannot live without our best friend for long time. We have to get our friend back to live as quickly as possible. Yes, am talking about mobile phone. Get one soon to get connected with the world. There are many service providers with many plans in the market to go with your mobile.
You can go on a monthly plan or opt for a prepaid plan depending on your requirement. Try to choose one wisely because some plans are expensive and pass the number to the family and friends.
Note the above tasks need not to be in the same order. It can vary as per the deadlines of the tasks to complete.
TIP: During your initial days, try to carry passport to show it as a proof of identity. This is MUST for the above tasks to complete.
